Abstract (EN)

Space which forms the basic aim of architecture, is a cultural and physical phenomena. It is an important issue, to investigate the formation and development of space in architecture, and to decide on the research methods that can be used. Thus to develop a research method for the purpose of space analysis, and to study buildings of a limited area with this method is the purpose of this study. The thesis consists five chapters. In the First chapter; the description of the problem, the aim of the study and the methods used in this area were given. In the Second chapter: space phenomena in architecture, space organization, factors and elements effecwing space, the relation of space with form, function and construction, and various theoretical approaches were dealt with. Space concept in Central Asia and Early Anatolian periods of Ottoman architecture were studied. In the Third Chapter: the formation and the development of inns and caravanserais during the Pre-Anatolian, Anatolia Seljukians, Anatolia Beyliks and Ottomans period were described. The Fourth Chapter which comprises the space analysis of inns and caravanserais consists of four stages. In the first stage; the classification and collection of the data on bulidlngs were explained. In the second stage, space analysis method was proposed, the criteria were defined, and the structure of the analysis tables were produced. In the third stage; the analysis of the Ottoman inns and caravanserais were made by the use of morphological tables. In the fourth stage; the evaluation of the findings were made. In the Fifth Chapter; the results and the proposals were discussed.Key Words: Space, space analysis, inns and caravanserais, organization, criteria, morphology,
