Archaeometric analysis of the seasonal mosaic of Antiochia

Abstract (EN)

In this thesis, the general history of Antakya, the cyclical structure of the region in the Hellenistic and Roman periods and the development process of mosaic art were discussed. After that, the mythological stories of the mosaic of seasons in which the seasons were depicted in the Hatay Archeology Museum and the four corners of the mosaic were described and the iconography was defined. The color analysis of the glass and stone tesserae on the mosaic was based on the Munsell Color Catalog and the digital Focus brand was determined by the Capsure Portable Color Matching device. Finally, the archaeometric analysis of the stone tesserae was made by Petrography (optical microscope). -XRF), characterized by archaeometry. In the light of the results obtained, rock type, texture, hardness degree, rock and minerals forming the aggregate were defined. The composition of the elements found within the framework of the results of the glass tessera analysis was determined and predictions about the color properties were made. The rock type biosparitic, biomicritic and micritic limestone were determined in the petrographic analysis of the stone tesserae. The samples of the stone tesserae classified in four groups in Group 1 and 2 (Table 4.1) are in the spritic texture. It was concluded that the samples in Group 3 and 4 (Table 4.1.) Were in micritic tissue. PED-XRF analysis of green tesserae determined for glass tessera as a result of Silicon Dioxide (SiO2) amount of 54,09%, Calcium Oxide (CaO) amount of 3,81%, Sodium oxide (Na2O) 1,81%, Potassium oxide (K2O) 0,477% In the light of the results, it was determined that there was no plant ash, the degradation and resistance in its structure were low. It was found that the element giving the green color to the glass tesser was copper (Cu) yielding 9270 ppm. Strontium (Sr) and zirconium (Zr) contents were used to determine the use of terrestrial raw material.
