Abstract (EN)
In this doctoral study, in the process from the Ancient Period to the present, the effects of gender discrimination against women on physical education, sports and thus their participation in the Ancient and Modern Olympics have been tried to be explained. In the research; whether there is a relationship between the social status of women and gender discrimination in Ancient Greece, what are the effects of gender discrimination on women's participation in sports and Ancient Olympics as spectators or athletes in Ancient Greece, whether there is a relationship between the social status of women and gender discrimination in Europe and the United States in the period after Ancient Greece; to what extent the dominant social structure in this process is decisive for women's participation in sports in general and the Modern Olympics in particular as an athlete, how Pierre de Coubertin's and IOC's attidue on women's sport affects women's participation as athletes in the Modern Olympics Games and how female athletes face and combat gender discrimination at the Modern Olympic, It has been tried to understand which developments contributed to this struggle and what the results were, whether women have full equality as athletes in today's Modern Olympics. In this study, which consists of ten main sections, a qualitative method was used for data collection, the databases of The Perseus Digital Library, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, Project Muse, Scopus, Google Academic, ICPSR, JSTOR, EBSCO, SOBİAD, ULAKBİM and YÖK National Thesis Center were searched. Documents such as the official reports of the Games, the IOC declarations, the Olympic Review, the official publication of the IOC, and the correspondence, speeches and writings of Coubertin, who is known as the founder of the Modern Olympics, were analyzed. According to the information obtained from the available sources, the results and recommendations were presented.
