Investigation of some biochemical parameters of patients using antipsychotic drugs and determination of possible nutrient-drug interactions

Abstract (EN)
Psychotic disorders are a common health problem all over the world. People in every country and every culture are affected. Antipsychotic drugs can be extremely helpful in various psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In this study, it was aimed to examine the effects of antipsychotic use on various biochemical parameters and nutritional status. The sample of the study consisted of patients who applied to the Psychiatry Clinic and were prescribed antipsychotic medication. The study was conducted retrospectively. The study was conducted with 200 patients aged 18-65 years whose biochemical parameters were analyzed at least twice. Of the individuals included in the study, 33% were male and 67% were female. The mean ages of male and female individuals were 42.1±14.1 years and 48.1±12.9 years, respectively. Quetiapine is the most prescribed antipsychotic among the 10 different antipsychotics used by patients, 69% of the patients used quetiapine. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) values and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) values of the patients in the first measurement increased significantly in the last measurement. When the mean of hemoglobin A1c, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein, albumin, urea, creatinine, vitamin B12 and folate were examined, the use of antipsychotics did not cause a significant change (p>0.05). When the difference between the first and last means of the variables and the change depending on the dose of quetiapine and the age of the individuals were examined, no significant relationship was found (p>0.05). In conclusion, the use of antipsychotics may be the cause of the clinically observed increases in fasting plasma glucose and LDL. Healthcare professionals and clinicians should consider the effects of antipsychotic drugs on plasma glucose and LDL cholesterol. Moreover, these results support the effects of antipsychotics on glucose homeostasis and lipid metabolism.
