Determination of antimicrobial activities of some medicinal and aromatic plant extracts naturally growing in Artvin province

Abstract (EN)

Medicinal and aromatic plants have been used as medicine to heal wounds and diseases in war and peace environments from the beginning of human history to the present day. Moreover; These plants have also been used in the fields of food, cosmetics industry, medicine, animal husbandry and agriculture. In this study, Tanacetum parthenium and Salvia glutinosa plants grown in Artvin province were used. The flower and leaf parts of these plants were ground into powder and extracted with methanol-ethanol solvents. The antimicrobial activity of the included extracts was investigated using the dry disc diffusion method. Four bacteria in the studies; Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Enetrecoccus faecalis (ATCC 29212), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922, Bacillus spizizenii (ATCC 6633) and a yeast Candida albicans (ATCC 10231) were used. Among the test organisms of ethanol and methanol leaf extracts of T. parthenium; S. aureus, B. spizizenii and E. faecalis, while flower extracts were effective only on B. spizizenii and S. aureus. Leaf and flower extracts of S. glutinosa were found to form inhibition zone only on S. aureus. Among the plant extracts, 96% ethanol leaf extract of S. glutinosa had the highest antimicrobial activity and was found to be more effective than the standard (commercial) antibiotic.
