Abstract (EN)
In this study, the habitat use, distribution and population density of brown bear (Ursus arctos L.) in the territory of Meydancık, Artvin, Turkey have been investigated. For his purpose, direct and indirect observation methodologies were used in the sampling plots and through the transects. Diet preferences of the brown bear were determined from direct observation as well as the lab analysis of the fecal that been collected in the field. In addition to fecal analysis, potential variation of diet in sampled vejetation areas were searched out. As a result, bears were extensively found in 67.3 percent of fir stands, 18.8 percent of spruce stands, 4.1 percent of pure oak stands and 3.7 percent of clear cut areas. We found that there were 13 bears per 100 km2 in the overall study area. We suggest that the habitat those are used by brown bears should be protected and improved. Before doing any management activities in the area, the habitat characteristics and diet preferences of the bear should be considered. The carrying capacity of the area is way above the average. Any excess population of the bear must be well balanced.
