Abstract (EN)

The Atatürk Dam Lake, the largest dam lake in Turkey, has been contaminated by domestic, industrial and agricultural effluents coming from Adiyaman city. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated the pollution in this reservoir using biochemical parameters in serum of Cyprinus carpio collected from polluted and unpolluted areas in the dam lake in August 2011. Samples of fish were collected from Sitilce site where Adiyaman city untreated wastewaters discharged into Atatürk Dam Lake, and Samsat site considered a reference site. The biochemical parameters in blood serum of fish were analyzed using biochemical autoanalyzers. The activities of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase and levels of cortisol, glucose, and potassium increased while total protein, cholesterol, calcium, sodium and chlorine levels decreased in fish from Sitilce site when compared to Samsat site. The present results indicate that the Atatürk Dam Lake is affected by untreated wastewater discharges and that therefore the effective measures must be taken such as setting up of a wastewater treatment plant in Sitice site to reduction of the dam lake pollution load.Key Words: Atatürk Dam Lake ? Pollution ? Cyprinus carpio ? Wastewater; Blood Parameters
