Turkist and nationalist practices in Atatürk period

The idea of Turkism emerged in the last period of the Ottoman Empire, and the first Turkist practices were implemented in the administration of the Union and Progress. In the Republic of Turkey, which was established after the National Struggle, a nation-state model was developed under the leadership of Atatürk. One of the nationalist policies implemented after the establishment of the state was the definition of nation as Turkish in the 1924 Constitution. However, with the restrictions on non-Muslims and foreigners and the exemptions provided to Turkish entrepreneurs, it was desired to establish Turkish dominance in the economy. Companies in the hands of foreigners were bought, mobilization of domestic goods was started and thus the dominance in this area was tried to be expanded. A new alphabet was adopted in the field of education, it was aimed to increase the literacy rate, and it was ensured that Turkish equivalents were found instead of foreign words in Turkish. Apart from this, since the National Struggle, the deputies mentioned the qualities of Turks in their speeches in the parliament and made speeches emphasizing Turkishness. With the legal regulation made in 1937, the state defined itself as nationalist.
