Abstract (EN)

It is very important to understand the efforts of European countries, the pioneers of the industrial revolution in dealing with environmental crises. Understanding how the EU emerges today as a important actor in global environmental governance is the main motivation for this thesis. This study focuses on the role of the European Union in environmental diplomacy initiatives at the international level by introducing the concept of environmental diplomacy. The aim is to show how the EU environmental diplomacy approach has evolved over the years, how it has changed global environmental governance, and to reveal its change after 2019. This thesis uses a multiple method based on document analysis, discourse analysis and content analysis from qualitative research methods. The data comes from concluding documents of the Council of EU and European Council, as well as from the official websites and the State of the Union of European Comission. Data from scientific literature and relavent online portals were supllemented with key concluding documents. As a result, an attempt was made to measure environmental diplomacy in these data through the prominent words about the environment. The results show that EU environmental diplomacy has become a comprehensive strategy after the announcement of the European Green Deal in 2019. This process has strengthened the EU's global leadership on climate action; environmental and climate diplomacy have become much more of a whole.
