Investigation of some meteorites by petrographic and elemental analysis techniques

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study is to classify Bursa, Fethiye and Didim meteorites (fallen in different regions of Turkey) and Morocco meteorite (imported from abroad) by using different modern analytical methods, to determine the element-isotopic composition of these meteorites, to compare the results obtained with other meteorites in the literature and to investigate the source of meteorites. In the first stage, the mineralogical composition of meteorites have been determined and petrographic and textural investigations have been made. After petrographic investigations on thin sections taken from meteorites, the analysis of X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) method has been performed to determine the indistinguishable minerals. All schist geochemical analysis have been done on meteorite samples. The major oxide elemental analysis of the meteorites have been done by using the Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES) method. Rare earth element and trace element concentrations of meteorites have been measured by using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) method. In the thin sections prepared similarly, major oxide and some trace element concentrations of the points assigned on each mineral have been determined by Electron Probe Micro Analysis (EPMA). Moreover, the inner structures of meteorites have been described by Scanning Electron Microscope- Energy Dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) method. It has contributed to the current literature by producing new data on meteorite research in Turkey in this study.
