Abstract (EN)

The issue of torsion in reinforced concrete has been ignored for a long time, but the studies carried out in this thesis have revealed the importance of torsion. This study was achieved to better understand the behavior of reinforced concrete elements under torsion in terms of torsional moment carrying capacity, failure mode, crack formation, energy dissipation capacity and ductility capacity. After literature review, parameters that are effective on the torsional behavior of reinforced concrete elements have been determined. An experimental study was conducted on, real-size reinforced concrete elements having different reinforcement ratios and concrete classes. The test setup was designed in such a way that when the test elements were subjected to torsional moments, longitudinal elongation would not be prevented and the torsional moments will be applied reversibly. Furthermore, the longitudinal elongation of some test elements, as well as torsional moments and angles of rotation, were measured during the experiments. After testing of specimens, the behavior was analyzed using the results obtained from the experiments, and as a result, it was found that the lateral reinforcement ratio is the parameter that most affects the torsional capacity, as expected. In addition, a suitable mathematical model was developed using the experimental results. This model was also compared with the experimental results in the literature and its agreement was verified.
