Abstract (EN)

This study aims to find out the qualitative and the quantitative variations of the Eastern Black Sea region village houses. The physical environmental, material and building cultural factors which effected these variations were also discussed. The thesis is made of an Introduction chapter, twelve main chapters and three supplements. In the Introduction it was shown that the characteristics of the Eastern Black Sea Region could yield interesting results for this kind of field studies. It was also emphasized that study of village archi tecture in Turkey is necessary for the benefit of the future building planning. In the First Chapter, the aim, the subject and the parameteres of the sutudy and the definition of the related terms were given. In the Second Chapter, "house" was taken as the product of village architecture. The development process of all the building elements in house were studied and exemplified. The environmental and the external factors which shape the building elements, their reflection to material and building the structural results of cultural interrelations were explained with the historical examples. The Turkish and foreign literature on village house studies were also listed. In the Third Chapter, the sutudy region which is limited with the Eastern Black Sea was introduced. The climate, topography, local building materials, constructions and the historical roots of the house structure were examined.In the Fourth Chapter the research methods and the techniques were explained. In the Eastern Black Sea region axial bands - 13 km. in width, ^efpendiculaFTo^ the coast and withirTthe limitsTof building-cul^ ture relations were defined. In each axial band 1-4 vilage units were selected depending on the settling area depth. In each of the villages selected by the sampling techniques, the most repeated and conserved house was chosen. These houses were recarded on a chart. The qualitative and the quantitative variations of the building elements throughout the region were studied with the correlation techniques. The results were illustrated with charts, tables and maps. In the Fifth Chapter the settlement characteristics relative to the physical environment of the selected vilages were discussed. In the Sixth Chapter the dimensional and the proportional features of the houses were discussed in respect to the physical environment and tradition. In the Seventh Chapter the external walls were discussed. The const ructional details, materials, types according to the orientation, the variations throughout the research region and the thermal features were studied. In the Eighth Chapter the windows were discussed. The ratios of window to wall area and its relation with the floor area, the height to width ratio of the windows, its relation with the physical environment were studied. In the Nineth Chapter the roofs in relation to the material, form and climate were discussed. In the Tenth Chapter the floors in relation to the material and application were discussed. In the Eleventh Chapter heating systems and the flues were discussed in relation to the material, technical features and variations throughout the region. The Twelveth Chapter is the evaluation and the conslusion chapter. The variations in materials and constructions were identified. It was seen that the building tradition had also been effective, besides tech nical and material knowledge, in these variations. It was concluded that the observed local varictions in constructions should be considered in new building designs.
