The effects of jigsaw technique supported by scientific argumantation about enviromental education on student learning process

The title in this study is presented as ?The Effects of Jigsaw Technique Supported by Scientific Argumantation about Enviromental Education on Student Learning Process?The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the Jigsaw technique supported by Argumentations about Environmental problems such as global warming, greenhouse effect, ozone depletion and volcanic eruptions and to determine the impact of the Jigsaw technique on academic achievement and the quality of the argumentations made by 8th grade students that participated in this research. The semi-experimental method was used in this study. The developed teaching material incorporates five different worksheets and one video film related to environmental problems. The sample of this research consisted of 8th grade students from Rize Çay elementary school and Rize Dikkaya elementary school in 2010-2011 academic years. To collect data, academic achievement test and video camera records were used. The Academic achievement test used in the research was developed using literature based on misconceptions about environmental problems. The test was used as pre test and post test. In addition some of the selected discussions were analyzed according to TAP. The collected data from pre and post test were analyzed with the SPSS package program. Statistical Analysis dependent-t test and independent t-test were applied. Dependent t-test results of students among experimental group showed a significant difference before and after the application. According to independent t test results, a significant difference in favor of the experimental group appeared. As a result, the teaching material developed for this research is helpful to eliminate misconceptions as well as to provide students to retain new conceptions in their long-term memory. From the results, some suggestions were made to researchers and educators.Key Words: Jigsaw Technique, Argumentation, Environmental Education, Worksheets.
