ABSTRACT This thesis examines the role of the UN Secretary General as a mediator in the 1974 Cyprus Crisis. The main point discussed in the thesis is that the UN Secretary General did not have the necessary leverage to put main driving terms of the two parties to the negotiation table to be discussed. This study depends on the "Conflict Analysis and Resolution" literature. The background of the 1974 Crisis is given and then evaluated in line with the adopted literature. The study is presented from the Turkish perspective. The result of the research shows that the lack of leverage of the Secretary General as a mediator prepared the ground for the termination of the conflict with the Turkish intervention to Cyprus. So, war provided a settlement of peace. IV
