Symbolic value of plants: A research on evocative plants of buildings and places in different functions

SUMMARY Symbolic Value of Plants: A Research on Evocative Plants of Building And Places in Different Function The aim of this study is to obtain the role of plants for constructing understandable, clear and acceptable environments and to find out the plants that have the suitable descriptive value for planting designs which show the identity of buildings and places in different functions. In the first chapter as the theoretical part of the study, informations about semiotic and sign theory, the famous people who had studied on sign theory and their theories are given. As a result of this part, in a sense of the theoretical search, the plants and places that can be define with different concepts and evocative plants for special building and spaces are found. After the application study that is made through these informations, it is determined that people define plants, buildings and places with certain concepts. Also as a result of the application it became certain that some plants can have evocative value for reminding people some buildings or places. The reason of the low degree found for plant-place cross tabulation can be define as a result of the variation in cultural formation and values of people which means that in different cultural formations same plants can evocate different building and places and also it is true for the opposite possition. Because of this uncertainity in aesthetic preferences of people, as a general result of this study it is suggested that the plants found in this study evocative for certain places can be use as useful one that can show the meaning of certain buildings and places among various planting design variations.
