Abstract (EN)

The global economic paradigm, beginning with mercantilism in the 16th century and extending to neoliberal conception, has undergone major transformations and breaks. The expansion of the world trade especially after the Industrial Revolution led countries to become acquainted with market-oriented production other than traditional economic activities. The fact that industrialization and economic activities begin to accumulate in certain areas has put other regions in a disadvantageous position. In this respect, the approaches of regional development, local economy and new economic geography are of great importance for countries. In this study, the theoretical and practical approaches of policies are discussed in order to resolve regional disparities. The regions which could not receive sufficient share in resource allocation and have been in a disadvantageous position in terms of capital accumulation owing to a variety of reasons have posed an obstacle for national development over time and caused socio-economic problems. Sustainable economic growth is targeted by putting the regions' development dynamics into action and increasing their competitive structure. In addition, European Union integration, one of the largest economies of the world, and regional economic policies that aim at enhancing its competitive structure have been examined and the policies that Turkey has implemented before and after the membership process in order to resolve regional disparities have been analyzed from a historical perspective.
