Investigation of the competition projects on the metropolitan scale in the context of the basic design principles - specific to the facade and site plan

Today, architectural project competitions allow architects to reveal their new designs and concepts and play an important role in ensuring the recognition of designers. Thus, a new communication method develops between architects. With the developing technology in recent years, international and national architectural project competitions have come to the fore, and the desire of most architects to take part in the competitions has increased. The fact that the basic design principles given in the architectural education process are included in the competition projects reveals the importance and necessity of this course. It is a very important point that these principles and the elements that make up the principles are used in the composition of the projects, especially in terms of aesthetics. In this context, the aim of this study is to analyze the award-winning projects in the service building architectural project competitions held in metropolitan cities in 2000 and later, in terms of basic design principles, in the context of basic design principles, on the scale of facade and site plan. As a secondary purpose; to reveal the effect of basic design principles in architectural project competitions. For this reason, in the architectural project competitions held in metropolitan cities in 2000 and later, award-winning service building projects are limited to the first and second prizes, and are examined in the context of basic design principles. For this purpose, by making a literature review about the basic design elements and principles, general information about the architectural project competitions for service buildings applied in the metropolitan cities of Turkey was obtained. The projects that won the first and second places are classified, and these projects are examined and analyzed in the context of basic design principles, and their common and non-common features are revealed. For a clearer understanding of the subject; First of all, the concepts associated with the basic design are included, and the concepts used in the research are explained, thus creating a conceptual framework. Visual analysis method plays a role in the determination of the competition projects examined. The examination of the contest projects discussed is presented in the form of analysis of the design visuals on the site plan and the entrance facades. The basic design principles are interrelated and this relationship is seen in this study. The findings obtained in the analyzes are presented with the support of graphics. As a result, the importance of the principles of repetition, harmony, balance and unity, which are constantly used in the projects discussed, appear as an indispensable element in the designs. As one of the basic design elements, the form has an important effect on the formation of repetition, while it is seen as an element that should be evaluated in the composition setup.
