Living donors' attitude changes towards cadaveric organ donation

Aim: This study is designed to compare living liver donors' attitudes towards cadaveric organ donation prior to and after surgery. Material and Method: Consecutive 30 living liver donors in the Inonu University Institute of Liver Transplantation from November 2018 to April 2019 are included in the study. Data are derived via a survey conducted preoperatively (24 questions), on the first postoperative month (11 questions) and on the postoperative third month in the outpatient clinic setting. Control group included 30 volunteer consecutive patients' adult relatives visiting the instution's outpatient clinic and the data are derived via survey consisting 24 questions. Statistical descriptive analysis and an additional analysis to compare the groups were made using chi square and student-t test. Results: There was not any statistically significant difference between the control group's and preoperative donor group's attitudes towards cadaveric organ donation. Donors' attitudes did not reveal any statistically significant difference when compared with the data of postoperative third month. Discussion: Undergoing donor hepatectomy did not influence donors' attitude towards cadaveric organ donation. Either uncertanity or lack of personal, social and religious motivational factors that exist in living donor organ transplantation between donor and recipient is among the facts keeping donors to improve their attitude for cadaveric organ donation. Providing cadaveric transplant recipients to participate in cadaveric organ donation campaigns and mention about radical improvements in their life may help to improve cadaveric organ donation rate.
