Determination and improvement of visual quality in environmental preference and evaluation: A sample of Trabzon coast line

SUMMARY Determination And Improvement Of Visual Quality In Environmental Preference And Evaluation: A Sample Of Trabzon Coast Line Fast and unplanned improvement and development process for Trabzon city caused the area to become a monotonious place as the past usage experience and the meanings derived from it have not been carried to the present In this research study it is obtained as a problem that coastal line of Trabzon city was changed into a place chosen as a recreational area because of "no any other choise" instead of users' "pleasentness" as the become unmemorable an meaningless for its users. The study was consisted of two stages: In the first stage the visual guality and scenic preference of coastal recreation area of Trabzon city was determined. Visual qualities obtained from literature review were photographed in the study area. Then these qualities were grouped and decreased in order to define the visual quality whole of the research area. In the second stage the development of the coastal area of Trabzon from past to the present were determined by interviews of citizens. The results of the development process were showed that the legibility of the area changed into a more chaotic form. The second part of the study was aimed change thşs negative effect into positive with alternative scenario proposals prepared by using visual qualities obtained from the literature revieww.For these visual quality development scenarioas, six point derived from the historical development process were chosen. As a result of the study three scenario proposals produced with the development of literatire reviewed visual qualities (naturalnesss, continuity, legibility, novelty, complexity-diversity, coherence and meaning) were proposed for each point.
