Turkish adaptation of the received social support scale for persons with serious mental illness

This methodological study was carried out to determine the validity and reliability of the Received Social Support Scale for Persons with Serious Mental Illness developed by Chronister et al. (2022) by adapting it to Turkish. The sample of the study consisted of 274 patients who applied to Bursa Kestel Public Hospital psychiatry outpatient clinic between April 2023 and April 2024. The data were obtained using a Personal Information Form, the Received Social Support Scale for Persons with Serious Mental Illness and the Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale. In the evaluation of the data, descriptive statistics as well as validity and reliability analyses were used. It was determined that the Turkish version of the Received Social Support Scale for Persons with Serious Mental Illness showed a 3-factor structure consisting of 21 items, and the items factor loadings ranged between 0.828 and 0.965. The goodness of fit indices of the scale are χ2/df=3.335, GFI=0.823, NFI=0.933, TLI=0.944, IFI=0.952, CFI=0.952, RMSEA=0.092, SRMR=0.024. In addition, Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the scale was calculated as 0.986. Item-total score correlation coefficients are between 0.806 and 0.929. Accordingly, it was revealed that the Turkish version of the Received Social Support Scale for Persons with Serious Mental Illness is both a valid and reliable measurement tool.
