Patriarchalism, a legacy of gender discrimination and marginalization of women in politics in Nigeria have all favored a slow or non-existent engagement of women in politics. This thesis focused on the barriers that prevent women from becoming elected officials and engagement of social media participation in Sokoto City. To conduct a survey, using the theories of cultural lag and quantitative methodologies, cultural lags have to be factored into the study design. First, a Likert scale questionnaire that contained 21 items was utilized to gather responses from 470 individuals. Data was obtained through a questionnaire and data analysis involved the use of descriptive statistics (frequency, percentages and mean). It was found that women constituted the majority of the electorate that was not active in politics. the study showed that socioeconomic and cultural impediments, household duties, bearing children, a lack of family support and lack of enabling opportunities were among the most often cited challenges stated by female participants advocating against their engagement in politics Only a handful of the women who held political leadership positions agreed that their involvement in politics brought about a beneficial impact in their communities. However, the majority of the women stated that they participated in social media while doing very little in terms of politics. It is argued in this thesis that if some of the problems outlined above are addressed, the prospects for Nigerian women in politics will be optimistic. Women in Nigeria should be empowered in their political engagement, particularly in regard to participating in grassroots communities, so as to better strengthen their capacity for a meaningful contribution to the country's political development.
