The mediating role of aggression in the relationship between childhood trauma and intimate partner violence

This study examines the mediating role of aggression in the effect of childhood traumatic experiences on intimate partner violence. A total of 253 participants aged 18 and above were included in the study. The data collection methods included the Demographic Information Form, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Romantic Relationship Assessment Scale (RRAS), Buss-Perry Aggression Scale (BPAS) and Attitudes Toward Dating Violence Scale. The data were analyzed using Simple Linear Regression, Process Macro Model 4 Mediation Analysis, t-test, and One-Way Variance Analysis (ANOVA). The analysis results indicate that childhood traumatic experiences have a significant effect on intimate partner violence and aggression levels in adulthood. In the analysis of the mediating role of aggression in the relationship between childhood traumatic experiences and intimate partner violence, it was found that childhood traumatic experiences significantly impacted partner violence. When aggression was included as a mediator, the effect of childhood trauma on partner violence decreased but remained significant, indicating a partial mediating role of aggression in this relationship. Furthermore, aggression was found to have a significant effect on attitudes toward the acceptance of intimate partner violence in the analysis.
