Assessment of periodontal tissues in individuals with multiple systemic diseases

Aim: Many studies have been conducted to explain the impact of systemic diseases on the health of periodontal tissues. Our study aims to evaluate the reflection of the quantitative increase in existing diseases in individuals on periodontal tissues. Material And Method: A total of 90 individuals aged 40 and above, without any systemic diseases, with one existing systemic disease, and with multiple systemic diseases, were included in the study conducted at the Periodontology Clinic of Adıyaman University Faculty of Dentistry. Routine clinical periodontal measurements including gingival index, plaque index, probing pocket depth, and clinical attachment loss were obtained from the voluntary participants included in the study. Results: It was observed that the average age of individuals without any systemic diseases who participated in the study was 53.87, the average age of individuals with a single systemic disease was 56.73, and the average age of individuals with multiple systemic diseases was 59.07. The probing pocket depth values of individuals with multiple systemic diseases were measured higher than the other groups. The clinical attachment loss values were also calculated to be higher in individuals with multiple systemic diseases compared to other groups. Gingival index and plaque index values did not show a significant difference among the groups. Conclusion: It has been determined that an increase in the number of existing systemic diseases in individuals may be related to the severity of destruction occurring in periodontal tissues.
