Examining of anxiety and basic psychological needs of high school students during the COVID-19 pandemic period

The purpose is to examine the anxiety and basic needs of high school students during Covid- 19. The study is designed as a mixed method research. The pattern of research is "Triangulation Design". "Demographic Information Form", "Basıc Psychological Needs Scale" and "State Anxiety Scale" are used to collect quantitative data. The qualitaive research of data collection is conducted with semistructed interview forms which prepared by the researcher. The universe of research is high school studens who study in Southeast region and its sample is 531 students. T-test and one-way analysis of variance, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney Test, Pearson Correlation Analysis and Multiple Linear Regression are used for the analysis of quantitative data and content analysis for the qualitaive research. According the analyses,psychological needs and their sub- dimensions are differed significantly according to the number of siblings, school type, grade level, monthly family income, mother/father education level, presence of a close relative/family member who is being treated. Anxiety level are differed significantly according to the number of siblings,school type, monthly family income, mother/father education level, presence of a close relative/family member who is being treated, estimate of the end date of the pandemic. Level of basic psycological needs predicting state anxiety level significantly for all dimensions of needs.Love and belonging and power needs are seen as stronger predictors of state anxiety level than other basic needs. Qualitative research is examined in light of students' views on their psychological needs and anxiety levels during the Covid-19 pandemic.
