Population census and population structure of the Republic Period in Agiri province (1927-1980)

Population is important in terms of knowing everything about individuals who make up a society, understanding and organizing society and human behavior. Moreover since it is one of the methods of obtaining important information about the social and economic situation of a country, population censuses have been carried out with various purposes and methods for a long time. Therefore, after the proclamation of the Republic, population censuses are conducted periodically in order to learn about the economic and social situation of the Republic of Turkey. The first census in the Republic of Turkey was held in 1927. After the second census in 1935, a census was conducted every five years until 1990. The census conducted in the Republic of Turkey shows that each province is examined separately. Population censuses of the province of Ağrı between 1927 and 1980, there are avaible important information about population number of headquarters, districts and villages, facial measurements and population densities, average age of population, literacy and educational status, languages spoken, marital status, places of birth, number of persons with disabilities and disability status, religious beliefs, professions and fields of work. The aim of this study is to examine the population of the province of Ağrı from 1927, which was the first census in Turkey, to 1980, with information obtained from Turkish Statistical Institute and Presidential Republic Archive and to reveal realistic data about the census, realistic data on the local history of the province, together with data from newspapers published by the local and National Press.
