Adaptability in gated residential complexes: The case of Trabzon Armada Residence

The concept of changeability refers to the ability of a space to accommodate new functions, maintain continuity, expand, and respond to different requirements, and it is particularly important in residential environments. This study is based on the premise that changeability is a key design criterion in housing design and that spatial modifications are necessary depending on users' characteristics, needs, and preferences. Accordingly, the study aims to examine the concept of changeability at the spatial level through the Armada Residence housing project located in Trabzon. The methodology of the study consists of four stages. First, a literature review was conducted to establish the theoretical framework. Second, data related to the study area were presented, and original and modified dwellings within the selected sample were identified. Third, original and modified dwelling plans were analyzed to determine the types of modifications made and the spaces most frequently transformed. Finally, based on these analyses, the modifications were evaluated in terms of spatial usability, and design recommendations for future changeable housing were proposed.
