An examination on the 1957 elections as a turning point in the power of the democrative party

The Republic of Turkey experienced a single party period from its foundation until 1946. In 1946, when Celal Bayar, Adnan Menderes, Refik Koraltan and Fuat Köprülü left the Republican People's Party and founded the Democratic Party, the 23 year single party period ended. In the 1950 general elections, the Democratic Party took power and the Republican People's Party, which had been in power for 27 years, fell into opposition. After coming to power, the Democratic party made great economic and political contributions to the country between 1950 and 1954 and won the 1954 general elections with a large majority. However, by 1955, economic problems emerged due to the unplanned investments made in the 1950-1954 period and the drought. The Democratic Party, which received reactions from both the opposition and the public due to economic problems, tried to prevent the reactions by enacting repressive laws. The general elections in 1958 were predate one year earlier.
