The effect of dexpanthenol and hypericum perforatum on closure of experimentally induced acute timpan membrane perforations

Abstract (EN)
Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of Dexpanthenol and Hypericum Perforatum on the local wound healing process of acute tympanic membrane rupture by determining the degree of fibrosis on the perforated area histopathologically. Material and methods: 25 female Wistar rats, 18 month-old, were divided into three groups: Control, Dexpanthenol, Hypericum Perforatum. The tympanic membrane rupture was performed by using a needle under the ketamine and xylazine anesthesia (50 and 5 mg/kg respectively). First groups both membranes were perforated and left for spontan healing process. The second groups rats both membranes were perforated, one side has only taken serum physiologic application, the other side were with Dexpanthenol. For the 3th group, %0,3 standardized dry extract of Hypericum Perforatum had been dissolved as %3 concentration in %10 ETOH, hence hypericin concentration of the solution was %0,0001. Both ear membranes were perforated in this group and while one side were taken Hypericum Perforatum solution, the other one with its vehicle, ETOH. Once every three days absorbable sponge replaced in to the rats ear canal with the relevant agents. The wound healing were clinically followed at the 4th, 7th and 10th days. Conclusion: Both agents positively and equally induced the wound healing on the tympanic membrane in a shorter period by increasing the fibrosis rate. It should be also considered they can be obtained easily and be cost effective treatment for tympanic membrane rupture treatment. Therefore, further studies are required to develop these products for readily available in different solvents and concentrations.
