As the development contunies in the industry, the increase in occupational accidents is inevetiable. It is possible with the improvement of health and safety conditions to prevent or decrease the number of these kinds of accidents. One of the precautions to be taken for health and safety conditions is to detect gas leaks before a possible fire. It can be seen in the literature review that some devices and mobile systems have been used to detect gas leaks. In accordance with the aim of this thesis, a robot was designed and developed. This robot was able to determine the location of the robot by using GPS module, and capture images from a camera. This robot has machine vision system that can be controlled by a remote control. In addition to these, this robot was able to detect the gas leaks and to determine the amount of gas. The computer received the data from robot and decided whether or not the amount of gas within limit values and produced the warning. The process of developing robot consisted of mechanical, electronics and software design. After the design and development of robot, the robot was tested in an airproof testing room. According to the results obtained from the tests, this robot was able to detect some combustible gases such as propane (C3H8) from different distances (0-200cm) at 0,5 m/s speed. This robot and results from this study can be used as a base for the future projects and studies related to the gas detection systems with robots.
