Economic feasibility of purse shine fishing vessels during 1996-1997 and 1997-1998 fishing seasons in East Black Sea

SUMMARY In this study, an economical analysis was made about purse seine, which is widely used in the East Black Sea. The Black Sea has a share of 80% fish catching in Turkey. The purse seine nets are commonly used in Black Sea for fishing. It must have high sinking speed, high specific gravity, high breaking strength and low resistant to water flow. Therefore, thin and strong fish net fibres, which have high specific gravity are preferable. Knot-less nets can be used in same parts of purse sine except bant and side parts to decrease resistant to water flow. According to the date collected in the fishing seasons of 1 996- 1 997 smaller vessels are more profitable than bigger ones which use two fishing nets on board when they fished in the Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea. However, in 1997-1998 bigger vessels in the same places were found to be more rantable than the others.
