Abstract (EN)

Multi-Principal Element Alloys (MPEAs), defined by their multi-component design and outstanding mechanical performance, are strong candidates for advanced structural applications. Among their strengthening mechanisms, transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) is particularly significant under extreme temperatures. This study investigates the temperature-dependent TRIP effect in a heterogeneous dual-phase MPEA fabricated through thermomechanical processing. Homogenized single-phase face-centered cubic (FCC) samples initially showed ductile behavior without transformation. After post-cold rolling heat treatment, a dual-phase FCC + body-centered cubic (BCC) structure was obtained, enabling TRIP during deformation. Mechanical tests were conducted at −196 °C (cryogenic), 25 °C (room temperature), and 400 °C (elevated). While the FCC samples showed no phase change, the dual-phase microstructures displayed clear TRIP effects at cryogenic and room temperatures. At −196 °C, TRIP activity was most pronounced, producing an exceptional combination of ~1600 MPa ultimate tensile strength and ~18% elongation. This enhancement arises from deformation-induced martensitic transformations and the associated strain hardening. The findings confirm that thermomechanical processing can effectively tailor microstructural stability and optimize performance across temperatures. Overall, this study provides insight into TRIP in heterogeneous MPEAs and highlights their potential for extreme environment applications while offering guidance for designing next-generation alloys with superior properties.
