The effect of four square writing method on written expression skills of 5th grade students

In this research, it has been analyzed that whether Four Square Writing Method has an effect upon 5th grade students' written espression skills. The sample of the study consists of 5th grade students who are attending Çatak Secondary School in Alaplı district of Zonguldak province in the academic year of 2018-2019. Class A (15 people) was determined as experimental group, Class B (12 people)was determined as control group. Four Square Writing Method was applied to experimental group, Writing Techniques According to Turkish Curriculum were applied to control group. The practice was continued by the researcher during 12 weeks. A measuring tool of persuasive writing and assessment scale for written work were used in order to acquire data. At the end of the research, acquiered data was analyzed by using t- test. The results obtained in the study are as follows: The results obtained in the study are as follows: It was observed that there was a statistically significant difference between persuasive text writing pre-test and post-test scores of experimental group to whom four square writing method was applied. No significant difference was found between persuasive text writing pre-test and post-test scores of control group to whom traditional writing methods were applied. It was found that there was a significant difference between persuasive text writing pre-test and post-test scores of experimental group to whom four square writing method was applied and control groups to whom traditional writing methods were applied. It was observed that there was a statistically significant difference between informative text writing pre-test and post-test scores of experimental group to whom four square writing method was applied. No significant difference was found between informative text writing pre-test and post-test scores of control group to whom traditional writing methods were xi applied. It was found that there was a significant difference between informative text writing pre-test and post-test scores of experimental group to whom four square writing method was applied and control groups to whom traditional writing methods were applied. These results reveal the effect of four square writing method upon students' written expression skills. Key words: Four Square Writing Method, written expression, writing, writing skills
