Dr. Nafiz Körez's life and his political activities

Turkish politic history has brought up numerous politicians with the emergence of multiple party system. One of them is undoubtedly Dr. Nafiz Körez. Ali Nafiz Körez was born in Kula district of Manisa province in 1910. He completed the elementary school in Kula and then, he attended the junior and senior high school in İzmir. Afterwards, he graduated from Medical Faculty of İstanbul University and started to work at Alsancak State Hospital in İzmir. He worked as Government Doctor in Kars in 1943 and in 1946, he began to work at Health Department of Giresun. Körez participated to elections took place in 1950 as Parliamentarian of Manisa from Democratic Party. He took part as Parliamentarian of Democratic Party on 9th, 10th and 11th Periods. Körez performed a duty as Minister of Health between 9 December 1955 and 25 November 1957. He returned deputyship in the parliament by 1957 elections. In his political life which lasted 10 years, Körez worked devotedly also for the other matters of the country apart from health and made a great effort in order to resolve the problems. He became one of the defendants of the military coup occurred in 27 May 1960 and he was indicted by investigations. Consequently, he was charged with violating the constitution and malfeasance. He was sentenced by Yassıada Courts to imprisonment for four years, two months and twenty days and to pecuniary penalty. After gaining his freedom, Körez quitted politics and returned to his hometown Kula where he opened a medical clinic. He died in 14 June 1993 at the age of 83 and buried at Cemetery of Kula. This study is done because of lack of studies about Nafiz Körez. Within this study, political life of Nafiz Körez and his activities in the parliament will be revealed by using official reports and archive records of Grand National Assembly of Turkey.
