Abstract (EN)

Construction sites are globally known to be amongst the most dangerous working environments. Ensuring safety at sites can be difficult because it is not affected by just one parameter; but it is governed by the behavior of the workers, site conditions, and the design and implementation of the safety measures. Falling from a height and getting hit by moving or falling objects are statistically the most common type of accidents at sites, and can result in serious injuries and fatalities. Traditionally, health and safety (H&S) experts perform site investigations and use two-dimensional (2D) site drawings to plan and implement safety measures related to hazards at site. In other words, the majority of the risk identification and associated hazard identification tasks performed by H&S experts are mainly based on the review of 2D drawings, particularly during the earlier stages of a construction. The major shortcoming of this traditional method is that it is difficult to identify the potential hazards from a 2D drawing, especially during the construction as the project is progressing. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is considered to have the potential to overcome the challenges observed with the traditional 2D-based planning and implementation of safety measures. A BIM-based approach can provide a continuous assistance for the identification of hazards and the related safety measures throughout the construction of a building. It can provide an efficient solution to plan and design the safety measures of a construction project both during the design and construction phases. The 3D model can also enable effective safety review of buildings. Therefore, this study aims to develop a BIM-based automatic fall safety review tool by using Dynamo which is an open-source visual programming add-in for Autodesk's BIM tool, Revit. This tool automatically reviews a 3D building model to identify its hazardous locations and places the related safety measures for preventing fall-related hazards in the building.
