Abstract (EN)
Recently, with the advancement of technology, there has been a rapid growth of low power wireless devices, such as wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and Internet of Things (IoT). Therefore, the energy requirement for perpetual operation of these devices has also been increased. However, in comparison the evolution of battery technologies is not yet capable to meet the energy demand, thus there exists a huge gap between the energy demand of the wireless devices and the energy density resulting from the development in battery technology. Therefore, the major challenge is to nd an alternative and promising source of energy that enables self sustained sensor node operations. In this regard, the concept of wireless energy harvesting from ambient green sources (e.g., solar, thermal, vibrational, RF) has gained much importance to power these devices. Among other sources, RF source is a potential candidate for energy harvesting due to continuous availability of RF signals. However, there exist critical challenges that need to be tackled, such as design and implementation of RF energy harvesting systems. The presented work demonstrates the design and analysis of RF energy harvesting from cellular base stations, operating simultaneously at 900 MHz and 1800 MHz. Moreover, the e ect of real time wireless channel on total harvested energy has been investigated, which is a novel aspect of this work. In addition, application of RF energy harvesting in WSNs has been discussed that aims to report the power consumption demand of a sensor node under di erent states. For this purpose, OpenMote hardware (the latest generation of Berkeley motes) has been used to perform experiments and to measure the power consumption demand under di erent states (e.g., sensing, transmission and reception).
