Probing spectral states of low mass X- ray binaries through timing analysis

Abstract (EN)
It is known that the outbursts observed from black hole X-ray binaries pass through various spectral states in the hardness-intensity diagram and show a structure similar to the "q-curve". Spectral state transitions known as "hysteresis", which exhibit a structure similar to spectral state transitions in low mass x-ray binaries that contain black holes, are also seen in neutron star systems. In this thesis, the 2002 / 2003-2010 outbursts of the black hole low-mass x-ray binary GX 339-4, and the 2002-2007 and 1999-2000 outbursts of neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries 4U 1608-52 and Aql X-1 were studied. Minimal time scales (MTS) were obtained as a result of the analysis of the sources using the archival Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer data. Minimal time scale - radiant power diagrams were created for each glare. These diagrams are compared with traditional hardness - radiant power diagrams. In addition, the relationship between MTS and the root mean square of squares, which is a measure of variability, obtained from power spectra was investigated. The relationship between the minimal time scale and the refraction frequencies obtained from the power spectra was also examined. In order to understand how the GX 339-4 behaves temporally and spectrally in different stages, the Compton-y parameter was calculated from the spectral analysis of the source and its relationship with other parameters was investigated. In this thesis, the minimal time scale - intensity diagrams created for the first time and were compared with traditional hardness - intensity diagrams and similarities were found between them. A strong positive correlation was observed between the minimal time scale and the cutoff frequency for different outbursts of 4U 1608-52 and Aql X-1. While differences were observed in the relationship between hysteresis cycles, hardness - minimal time scale for each outburst of the sources examined, it was observed that the correlation of minimal time scale - cutoff frequency was universal.
