Investigation of the reflection of the child's level of participation in the family on social skills in the context of parent-child communication

In this study, it is aimed to examine the reflection of family involvement levels on the social skills of 48-72-month-old preschool children in the context of parental communication. The research was structured with the survey model, one of the quantitative research methods. The sample of the study consists of the parents of 350 children attending kindergarten/preschool in Kırklareli province. Personal Information Form, Parent's Communication with Child Scale, Child Participation Scale, Social Skills Assessment Scale were used as data collection tools. A negative, moderately significant relationship of -0.573 was found between the child's level of participation in the family and the level of communication between the parent and the child (p<0.05). Higher scale scores of the participation scale indicate that the family is more participatory, while lower scale scores indicate that the child is more participatory. High scale scores of the communication scale indicate that communication is positive and high, while low scale scores indicate that communication between parents and their children is negative and low. Accordingly, as parent-child communication increases, the child's level of participation also increases. Child participation scale scores are affected by respect-acceptance, communication levels of listening without barriers, and social skills of interacting with a group and carrying out a task. Looking at the beta coefficients, it was observed that the variable that most significantly affected the child participation scale scores was unimpeded listening. Openness to sharing, Sensitivity and Relationship initiation and maintenance skills have no effect on child participation scale scores (p>0.05).
