The effects of social media use among parents in the context of the relationships within family

The increasing frequency of use of social media platforms has affected the family institution and relations among individuals in various aspects. Excessive and misuse of social media reduces the relationships that need to be established within the family and prevents face-to-face communication. Therefore, social media tools play a role from different perspectives in transforming the familiar framework regarding family relationships. Based on this, the main purpose of this study is to determine and analyze how the effects of parents' use of social media tools on family relationships. Research data has been obtained by using a semi-structured interview form, which is a qualitative research technique. In this context, data has been obtained by conducting interviews with parents who reside in different provinces of Turkey and actively use social media tools. Within the criterion sampling model, the sample of this research consists of a total of 32 parents, 17 women and 15 men, who actively use social media tools. The study aims to reveal how parents' social media use affects the family institution in the light of the data obtained within the scope of the research. When the data obtained in the study are examined; Regarding the effects of parents' use of social media on family relations, results have been obtained that, apart from some limited useful content, their use of social media tools in general harms the socially ideal family relations between family members and damages family privacy
