Abstract (EN)
Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) traditionally focuses on improving processes and resource efficiency. However, with rapid technological developments, the field now increasingly requires skills in programming, data analysis, and algorithmic thinking. The importance of programming skills, including object-oriented programming (OOP) and database knowledge, has grown as modern industrial and systems engineering increasingly relies on data-driven decision-making and advanced computational tools. This study examines the role of programming and related technical skills in the education and professional activities of ISE practitioners. Based on survey responses, it sheds light on how well current ISE curricula meet industry needs and whether a stronger focus on technological competencies is required alongside traditional ISE knowledge. These findings are further supported by firsthand instructional insights, highlighting that while the use of more accessible prototyping languages helps students feel more comfortable, it can also reduce their exposure to essential design principles like abstraction and modularity. The paper argues that surface-level fluency should not replace the deeper analytical thinking that modern engineering roles demand.
