The effects of the perception of a handiccapped in dividual in the children's litrerature on the child's developmental areas as in the example of 'out of my mind'

The purpose of this research is to indicate to what extent a child's manners and behaviours differ when he/she encounters with an individual with some physical or mental handicaps in real life by being affected from a literary work. The personal and social contributions of this change on child will be observed. The subgoal is to identify the childrens' level of interest on the novel which contains a handicapped character. In this direction, Sharon M. Draper's novel 'Out Of My Mind' and its effects on children has been analysed. This research has three parts; the conceptual frame is stated in the first part, being a handicapped person and the field of a child's development are in the second part, and the evaluation with the findings is in the third part. Mixed combination method has been used in this research to obtain the qualitative and quantitative data. To get the quantitative data, pretest - posttest desing has been applied to the randomly chosen sample group and the verifications indicating whether attitudes towards a handicapped child changes or not has been found. For the qualitative data, the document review and semi-structured interview methods have been pracatised. For the subgoal of the research which is identifying children's interest on the literary work that contains a handicapped character, semi-structured interview method has been used. The sample group is consisted of 24 girls from 6th grades. It's supported with the tables that a qualitative children's literary work which contains a handicapped character contributes to the readers personal and social development by appealing to their mind and emotional world.
