The investigation of the relation between self injury behaviour in adolescents and negative automatic thoughts

Self-injury behaviour (SIB) is a situation described that harming purposely on one's own body without the aim of death.In recent years,self-injury behaviour became an important health problem among adolescents.The relation of self-injury behaviour and negative automa-tic thoughts was not researched sufficiently.This research was applied to 9th,10th and 11th gra-de students receive education in two different districts of Malatya in 2015-2016 academic year with the aim of researching the relation of self-injury behaviour and negative automatic thoughts.380 adolescents (high school students) show self-injury behaviour were included in the study. This thesis study aim to research the relation of self-injury behaviour and negative au-tomatic thoughts was formed with a correlational pattern. Participants were evaluated by using the scale of Statements about Self-Injury,Automatic Thoughts Scale and Personal Information Form prepared by the researcher. In the study,whether there was a significant relation between self-injury behaviour in adolescents and negative automatic thoughts or not was analysed with Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Method. In determining whether self-injury behaviour and negative automatic thought levels differentiate in a significant level with sex,association,confidence and violence which are ot-her independent variables or not, Independent Groups T Test, for variables of school ty-pe,class,achievement,number of sibling,education of parents,income and friend, One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA),as for understanding the source of differentiation, LSD Post Hoc Test was used.In the study,significance level was accepted as 05 and analyses were done with SPSS programme. In the research conducted;it was found a significant relation positively and statistically between self-injury behaviour in high school students and negative automatic thoughts.It was found that there was a significant difference between self-injury behaviour and school ty-pe,class level,achievement and parental togetherness;there was not a significant difference between self-injury behaviour and sex,number of sibling,education level of pa-rents,income,friend,confidence and domestic violence variables. It was found that there was a significant difference between automatic thoughts and sex, school type,achievement,friend,confidence and domestic violence variables;there was not a significant difference between automatic thoughts and class level,number of sibling, educa-tional level of parents,association and income level variables.
