Analysis of social media addiction in terms of various variables

Social media addiction is more likely to occur in adolescents who grow up with technology starting from infancy. This situation creates a negative effect for adolescents who have not completed their mental and physical development. This research aims to examine the social media addiction of secondary school students studying in private education institutions in Adana province Seyhan district in terms of sociodemographic variables. The research was conducted with 411 students, 238 girls and 173 boys, studying in a private education institution in the Seyhan district of Adana province in 2021-2022. Simple random sampling method was used for the representation of the universe; In this sampling method, every unit in the universe has an equal probability of entering the sampling. Volunteer participant form, social media addiction scale and personal information form were used to obtain the data. In the study, Mann Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis H test were applied to determine whether there is a significant difference between descriptive statistics variables. According to the results of the study, when the total and sub-dimension averages of the social media addiction scale are examined, it is seen that female students have higher average scores than male students, and students with a good income level have higher average scores than students from other income levels. It has been observed that students who use social media for more than 7 years have higher average scores than other groups. The data obtained in this study were discussed according to the literature and suggestions were made.
