Effect of four week inspiratory muscle training on performance of male basketball players

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of four-week inspiratory muscle training on aerobic and anaerobic performance in male basketball players. A total of 20 basketball players (subjects: 10 years: 28,10±4,51 years; control: 10 years: 18,70± 0,95 years) conducted in the study. Respiratory functions were determined by spirometry before inspiratory muscle training (IMT) and respiratory muscle strength were measured with a respiratory pressure meter. The IMT group performed 4 weeks 30 dynamic inspiratory efforts twice daily for 5 days each week completed 60 breaths per day at the same hours of the morning and evening, with the IMT increasing by 1 unit (10 cmH2O) per week, equivalent to 40% of the maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP). The wingate bicycle ergometer used to anaerobic power parameters and aerobic capacities were also calculated using the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1 protocol. The independent T test (Independent Sample T Test) was used for the comparison between the pre-post tests of all inter-group parameters and the mean difference between the groups. The change in FVC (lt) and FEF Max (lt / sec) in the experimental group after IMT was statistically significant (p<0.05). Although there was no significant increase in other respiratory function values, there was no significant difference (p> 0.05). The highest increase was in IC (42.22%), FEF Max (35.26%) and MRP (22.33%). In the control group, only significant changes were observed in SVC and MIP (p <0.05). In the experiment group, significant differences were determined in all the values except Mininum Power among the anaerobic power indicators (p <0.05). In addition, Time To Peak increased by 34.03% and Peak Power increased by 5.66%. In the control group, there was no significant change in all parameters after Wingate test (p> 0,05). VO2max mean value increased by 14.74% (p <0,008) and control increased by 7,50% (p <0,006). As a result, respiratory muscle training; respiratory functions, respiratory muscle strength, anaerobic and aerobic capacity are positively influenced by those who practice regularly.
