Determination of antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of some Tanacetum L. (Asteraceae) taxons spreading around Erzincan

Abstract (EN)

In this study the antimicrobial and the antioxidant activities of the chloroform and the ethanol extracts of the leaves of seven different species spreading around Erzincan (Tanacetum argenteum (Lam.) Willd. ssp. argenteum, Tanacetum argyrophyllum (C. Koch) Tvzel. var. argyrophyllum, Tanacetum armenum (DC.) Schultz Bip., Tanacetum nitens (Boiss&Noe) Grierson, Tanacetum heterotomum (Bornm.) Grierson, Tanacetum densum (Lab.) Schultz Bip. ssp. eginense Heywood, Tanacetum alyssifolium (Bornm.) Grierson) were investigated. The antibacterial activities of the extracts were determined by using the disk and well diffusion and MIC methods. Also the antifungal activities of all extracts were determined by using disk and well diffusion methods. Among the species studied, it was identified that the extracts of Tanacetum argyrophyllum (C. Koch) Tvzel. var. argyrophyllum chloroform, Tanacetum armenum (DC.) Schultz Bip. chloroform and Tanacetum alyssifolium (Bornm.) Grierson chloroform and ethanol, showed effective antibacterial activity against Gram (+) bacteria. Also the antioxidant activities of the studied extracts were identified by using DPPH radical scavenging activity, reducing power, total fenolic content, total flavonoid content, ABTS radical scavenging activity, metal chelating activity and determination of total antioxidant capacity methods. For many parameters, it was determined that; especially Tanacetum heterotomum (Bornm.) Grierson extracts have high antioxidant activity.
