Ocular blood flow evaluation in the essential blepharospasm patients with doppler ultrasonography

Abstract (EN)
Benign essential blepharospasm is a focal facial dyskinesia with involuntary contraction of the muscles around the eye. Mostly blepharospasm studies are about the pathophysiology of the disease in the brain. To the best of our knowledge, there are no studies in the literature that evaluating the orbital imaging findings of essential blepharospasm patients. The aim of our study was to determine whether there is any change in ocular blood flow and blood supply of the muscles around the eyes in blepharospasm patients and the flow changes that may be caused by spasm. Thirty blepharospasm patients and 30 control groups were included in the study. Ophthalmic, central retinal, posterior ciliary, temporal artery peak systolic velocity and end-diastolic velocity were measured and resistive index values were calculated. In addition, superior ophthalmic vein flow velocity central retinal vein flow velocity and orbiucularis oris muscle resistive index were measured. No significant difference was found between the groups in terms of age and sex distribution (p 0.345 and 0.870, respectively). superior ophthalmic vein flow velocity were significantly higher in essential blepharospasm group (p=0.001). There was no significant difference in other values. In conclusion, our study suggested that ocular spasm in essential blepharospasm patients had no effect on ocular flows except superior ophthalmic vein flow velocity. In our study showed that superior ophthalmic vein flow velocity flow was increased in the essential blepharospasm group. We believe that this statistical difference can be clinically and pathophysiologically significant.
