Evaluation of pedestrian areas in the city center of Eskişehir with the urban design aspect

Increasing visual and physical pollution of environment due to rapid urbanization people in the cities have needed to live in healty and safety built environment. Therefore, livable urban environment is of importance.It is necessary that urban planning and urban design process considering community life are essential for livable environment. Harmonic, balanced and perceptable environmental organization can be realized by means of succesful planning, design and application process of public spaces and pedestrian areas.Public spaces are social activity areas in which individuals contact with each other. These spaces should be living areas suitable for economic and social structure of the community and places in which people feel safe themselves.In this study with the topic of ?Evaluation of Pedestrian Areas in the City Center of Eskişehir With the Urban Design Aspect?, current conditions of public spaces and pedestrian areas were determined and evaluated with the urban design aspect. Three zons were selected by means of zonning in the city center. Urban image analysis in accordance with Kevin Lynch?s approach regarding visual perception of the city was made in pedestrian areas.At the result of investigation and evaluation of pedestrian areas in the city center, it was determined that pedestrian areas have visual and aesthetical quality, safety and confortable urban furnitures, attractive landmarks which create urban quality and urban identity.
