Abstract (EN)
Together with Eskişehir's transformation into a student city, residential spaces in areas near university campuses have accompanied this transformation in accord with the zeitgeist. While this transformation may well be approached through discussions on housing, which always remains on the agenda of architecture, the fact that the spatial transformation predominantly takes place in Yenibağlar and Eskibağlar, which has become a student district, requires such a study to extend beyond "housing", and to involve the topic as a social case with its aspects such as everyday life and relations of production. The present thesis focuses on the transformation of studio apartments (1+1 and 1+0) and their massive dissemination as architectural commodities, which started in early 2000s in Yenibağlar and Eskibağlar districts around the Yunus Emre Campus of Anadolu University. Together with the transformation of spatial characteristics of houses in this area, production of capital and relations of everyday life are analyzed. The term "apart flat", besides its original definition in the architectural literature, i.e. temporal residence, is now a generic name that denotes studio apartments in the local parole. The present study looks into the causes and effects of the transformations of residences together with its name in the everyday language. The samples from the area, and the area in general, are analyzed not only in terms of architectural theory and practice, but also in terms of how social life, everyday life relations and urban actors effect the transforming space. Historical data and town planning regulations are the main materials for the analysis. The study also proposes spatial provisions for the sustainability of the area as a student district.
