Application of ethical values on ships and examining their effect on increasing the work performance of seafarers

The maritime profession is a broad sector in which trade takes place in national and international waters where seafarers operate. This sector also includes important elements such as customary rules, human factors at sea and ethical codes in maritime. With these features, the maritime profession, unlike other professions, brings with it its own unique challenges and advantages. Seafarers have to cope with challenges such as long-haul voyages, changing weather conditions, busy working hours and lack to motivation. At the same time, they may encounter problems such as abuse of customary rules in the maritime profession, being forced to behave unethically while working on the ship, and the lack of an ethical working environment on the ship. The main purpose of this study is to produce solutions to the problems faced by seafarers, to measure the impact of maritime ethics codes on seafarers and to determine the effects of this effect on business performance. The data set used for the purpose of the study was obtained by survey method. In this study, IBM SPSS 23 and SmartPLS 4 package programs were used for the analysis of the data. According to the analyzes, it has been concluded that the ethical codes valid in maritime affect the behavior of seafarers by 43% and that seafarers who comply with these ethical codes achieve success in their jobs and increase their motivation.
