Relationship between pesonality and perception of health among caregivers of home dependent patients

Abstract (EN)

Objective: The aim of this research is to determine whether there is a relationship between the personality traits of the caregivers of the Marmara University Training and Research Hospital Registers and general health perceptions. Methods: The study was selected among 600 Eve dependent patients in the Pendik region of Istanbul and in Marmara University Training and Research Hospital registry in February and March of 2017. 86 people selected according to the survey-based cluster sampling approach. In the study, personal information form developed by the researcher was collected to gather information about the caregivers of the patients who need care at home and the people they care, as well as information about independent variables. TIPI-10 (Ten Person Inventory of Personality) and Perception of Health were used as data collection tool in the study. SPSS 23.0 program was used in the analysis of the descriptive and relational screening model. In the study, frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, min-max values, Pearson's correlation, İndependent t test and ANOVA test were used in the analysis of the data. Findings: The average age of the caregivers in the survey was 42.3 ± 11.3 years (min: 25, max: 58), 74.4% were female and 25.6% were male. 51.9 % of the caregivers were between the ages of 36-51 and 54.7% of them were primary school graduates. 79.8% of the caregivers were married and 72.6% were unemployed. 61.4% of the caregivers had social security and 45.7% of them had a monthly income of 801-1500 TL. 87.2% of the caregivers live with 3 or more people. 57.0% of the caregivers had health problems and 49 of them had multiple complaints. In addition, 44.2% of these people stated that they were using drugs continuously. 27.9% of the caregivers were the patient's daughter. 69.8% of caregivers were taking medication and 38.4% caregivers were not receiving any support during caregiving. 72.1% caretakers were women, 93.6% were over 50 years old and 74.4% were bed dependent. OMKÖ subscale averages ranged from 4.28 to 5.96. "Emotional Stability" was the highest personality score with an average score of 5.96, while the "Extraversion" was the lowest with an average of 4.28. The mean score of the subscale of health perception scale ranged from 3,05 to 3,67. While the highest health perception subscale was "importance of health" and "self-awareness", the lowest health perception scale subscale was "certainty". There was a statistically significant positive correlation between conscientiousness, agreeableness and emotional stability in the subscales of personality traits (p <0,05). There was also a positive correlation between extraversion and openness (p <0.05). Among "center of control", "certainty" and "importance of health" dimensions of health perception sub-scales positive but weak correlation was found. (p <0,05). Conclusion: Care is a difficult and distressing process for both the caregiver and the patient. It is also thought that caregivers' health status affect caretakers' mental and physical well-being. It was observed that family caregivers suffer psychological and physical health problems due to the care work. Majority of caregivers are found women It's been observed that some caregivers were willing to receive psychological support.
