Evaluation of evolutionary architecture through the relationship between philosophy of nature and architecture

Since prehistoric times, human beings have tried to understand nature and used the knowledge they obtained in solving the problems they encountered. Thereby, people have shaped their environment according to their conception of nature. Architecture is one of the disciplines where the influence of the philosophy of nature on human designs can be understood. After the theory of evolution has been brought up to matter, nature has no longer understood as static, unchanging, and non-transformable, it has started to be comprehended as a changing, evolving, and developing dynamic reality. For this reason, a paradigm shift has occurred in the relationship between the philosophy of nature and architecture. Therefore, evolutionary architecture was born, which aims to use the operation of the natural evolutionary mechanisms as an architectural design method. Within the scope of the study, initially, the development of the relation between philosophy of nature and architecture are analyzed to comprehend the background of evolutionary architecture. Afterward, the relationship between the philosophy of nature and evolutionary architecture is examined, and the theoretical foundations of evolutionary architecture are evaluated through the theory of evolution, genetics, and computational design. Reading the history of architecture through the philosophy of nature and examining evolutionary architecture through the philosophy of nature-architecture interactions and interdisciplinary relationships constitute the original value of the study.
